Advantages and Disadvantages of Online Courses

Online learning is a distance learning method using Internet access and a computer. Companies, educational institutions, tutors choose the introduction of e-education worldwide as some forms of online classes are more suited to teaching their employees and students. This method has both pros and cons compared to traditional face-to-face learning. However, every year more people prefer to study online rather than attend classrooms.

The main advantage of online learning is its flexibility; most of the classes are carried out independently. There is an opportunity to choose the time and pace of work convenient for a student, while the latter should meet deadlines. The traditional classroom format implies compulsory attendance of lectures and seminars, the time and place of which are strictly defined. Each person has the rhythm and speed of perception of new information. In online courses, a student can always return to studying the topic, such as re-watching the lesson’s video and consolidating the knowledge. In an offline group, the teacher sets the pace, and there is no way to listen to the material again. The student will have to adjust to it, which can adversely affect the quality of the material’s understanding.

The degree of teacher involvement in distance learning can vary depending on the characteristics of the course. If a student took classes online, there would be no communication with the teacher. It can be doubted whether the material was understood correctly or whether a student made a mistake while completing the assignment. Studying within the traditional format, the student can ask questions at lectures and seminars, clarify something after them. All projects are monitored, and the likelihood of errors or misunderstandings is significantly reduced.

Online learning is an affordable way to gain knowledge that requires organization and willpower; offline courses demand more time and money. The positive side of online learning is that it allows people to get an education, especially those who live far away or for many reasons, including illness, lack of self-confidence. A feature of classroom attendance is live communication, contributing to social development, and making it possible to learn from professionals’ experience.
