Lesson Plan: Cognitive Development

  • Grade Level: School Year 1 (5-6 years)
  • Subject: Arithmetic
  • Objective: Learners will be able to use both their counting and interpersonal communication skills during an educational game.
Time Activity (ies) Material(s) Needed Purpose
~ 15 min A Great Wind Blows: Children sit on their chairs, and when the teacher says the phrase “A great wind blows for everyone who (insert any characteristic, e.g., has more than one sibling),” children who are affected have to move to another chair at least two chairs away from their own. A child that does not find a place to sit at the end of the round stands next to the teachers and helps with new ideas. Chairs (the number equals to the number of students in the classroom) This activity is an icebreaker that will help children feel more relaxed and ready to cooperate with each other during the lesson.
~ 25 min Snakes and Ladders:
Students are divided into groups (5 students in each group). Their task is to roll the dice and move their gaming peace from start to finish. The ladders in the way may assist them, whereas snakes hold back their progress.
Cardboards with “Snakes and Ladders,” game pieces, dice. This game helps children exercise counting skills and how causal links works (snakes impeding the way and ladders boosting one’s performance). The game is also aimed at developing one’s abilities to compete healthily and cooperate within a team (Click & Parker, 2011).

Lesson Plan: Physical Development

  • Grade Level: School Year 1 (5-6 years)
  • Subject: PE
  • Objective: Students will learn the basics of teamwork through engaging in the basics of volleyball; they will also learn the fundamentals of forearm pass.
Time Activity (ies) Material (s) Purpose
~ 5-7 mins Mirroring:
Students are arbitrarily divided into pairs. In turns, they mirror each other’s movements on the condition that they cannot stop moving.
This activity helps warm up kids’ bodies and cardio warm-up. Students also learn how to pay close attention to the motion of others in order to get ready to do the same during the game.
~ 10 min Circle walk and running:
Students form a circle and start walking faster with every round until teachers tell them to start running; students run 1-2 rounds.
This activity helps students warm up all kinds of muscles and prepare their bodies for physical activity.
~ 10 min Forearm Pass:
The teacher explains the process of forearm passing – pretending to sit in a chair, keeping the arms straight, interlocking hands. Students shadow the teacher’s movement.
This activity has the educational purpose of presenting the basics of volleyball pass.
~ 15 min Forearm passing practice:
Students pick up volleyballs and pick a partner. Partners stand approximately 5 feet from each other and practice forearm passing in turns.
Volleyballs This exercise helps students obtain practical knowledge of forearm passing. Moreover, students learn how to cooperate in pairs in order to achieve satisfactory results. Thus, the purpose is to make them experience the importance of anticipation and cooperation in team sports.
~ 10 min Passing Lane: Students form small groups of 5 or 6 and leave one ball for the team. They form a circle and practice forearm passing to each of their new partners in order to improve reaction and cooperation. Volleyballs The purpose is to make students feel like a part of a bigger team, thus enhancing their reaction and feeling of responsibility. Students also improve their skills of passing.
