Special Education: JJ’s Case Analysis

It is important to note that a child of interest for the given description is JJ (pseudonym). He/she is a 3-years old who was born on March 10, 2019. JJ has special education needs due to challenges with communication and social skills, which is why the education process requires adjustments in order to accommodate the disability. JJ shows a high degree of interest and engagement in the learning process and, reciprocally, actively participates in class activities as well.

Since one’s inability to communicate and socialize can be a hindrance to the learning and education processes due to the criticality of communication in the provision of knowledge and information, JJ’s specific needs require accommodations. In accordance with the DEC (2014) Recommended Practices, it is stated that “sensitive and responsive interactional practices are the foundation for promoting the development of a child’s language and cognitive and emotional competence” (p. 14). In other words, a greater degree of awareness and competency is needed from an educator to properly and effectively address JJ’s special needs. The services received are primarily focused on the promotion of social, cognitive, and communication developments. The daily routines involve creative endeavors, such as drawing, painting, building, and playing. JJ’s family consists of his mother and father, who live together and speak English. The family is primarily concerned with JJ’s academic achievements and comprehension of knowledge. The parents report having a generally positive experience with the use of DEC interaction practices, but they struggled with finding an effective solution before learning about the method.

In conclusion, JJ is outstandingly motivated and open about his/her desire to learn and succeed in life despite being only a 3-year-old. Neither JJ nor his/her classmates express any form of identity difference, and he/she does not feel isolated from the group. He/she learns in a supportive and inclusive environment, which is cultivated by the educator, other children, and parents. JJ’s case is an excellent demonstration of how special education can be designed in a manner that maintains the students’ integrity, worth, and dignity.
