David Spiegelhalter

David Spiegelhalter is a British statistician well-known for his work in statistics, especially biostatistics. He is a Fellow of Churchill College, Cambridge. Spiegelhalter is Chair of the Winton Centre for Risk and Evidence Communication at Cambridge’s Centre for Mathematical Statistics. David is an highly-cited ISI researcher.

Education and Career

Spiegelhalter gained his BA degree in mathematics from Keble College, Oxford, in 1974. David attended the University College London, where he acquired an MSc in statistics in 1975 and Ph.D. in mathematical statistics in 1978.

David Spiegelhalter started his career as a research assistant at Brunel University in 1976. Later, he joined the University of California, Berkeley as a visiting lecturer in 1977-78. After finishing his Ph.D., David joined the Royal College of Physicians as a research assistant from 1978 to 1981.

In 1981, Spiegelhalter started working as a statistician at the Medical Research Council Biostatistics Unit, Cambridge. Since 1991, David has been an honorary lecturer at the University of Hong Kong. From 2006 to 2012, he divided his work between the Medical Research Council Unit and the Cambridge Statistical Laboratory.

In 2012 he switched to full-time work at the Statistical Laboratory at the Winton Centre for Risk and Evidence Communication until his retirement. For now, David remains chair of the Winton Centre and Non-Executive Director of the UK Statistics Authority.
