Education and Career

Martin Kulldorff obtained a BSc degree in mathematical statistics from Umeå Universitet, Sweden, in 1984. After graduating, he moved to the US as a Fulbright fellow to acquire a PhD in operation research and industrial engineering from Cornell University in 1989. His PhD thesis was dedicated to controlling games with a time limit.

In 1989, Kulldorff served as a Human Rights observer in Guatemala for Peace Brigades International. After Guatemala, He returned to Sweden where he served for 6 years as an assistant professor (5 years) and associate professor of the Department of Statistics at Uppsala University. In 1993-94, he worked as a visiting scientist for the Biometry branch at the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, NIH.

In 1995, Kulldorff moved to the US to work at the National Cancer Institute (NCI) as a Scientist at the Biometry Branch, Division of Cancer Prevention. In 1998-2003, Martin has been working as an associate professor of the Department of Community Medicine and adjunct associate professor of the Department of Statistics at the University of Connecticut.

In 2003, Kulldorff joined the Harvard Medical School as a professor. In 2015-21, he worked at Brigham and Women’s Hospital as a professor of Medicine in the Division of Pharmacoepidemiology and Pharmacoeconomics.

Research Interests

Martin Kulldorff’s main research interests lie in developing and applying statistical methods for disease surveillance. He has contributed to the development of statistical and epidemiological methods for the early identification of disease outbreaks and side effects of vaccines and drugs.

His methods and software for scan statistics are well-cited and used in several disciplines to discover geographical clusters and assess whether or not they are due to chance. Kulldorff also uses statistics in a number of different subject areas such as cancer epidemiology, nutritional epidemiology, infectious diseases, vector-borne diseases, antibiotic-resistant bacteria, birth defects, pharmacoepidemiology, vaccine studies, and health research.
