Michael B. Siegel, MD

Dr. Michael Siegel is a physician, who trained in epidemiology at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta. He completed his residency in Preventive Medicine at the UC Berkeley School of Public Health. His primary research interests are in tobacco control, alcohol consumption, and firearm violence. His tobacco research has focused on the health effects, exposure, and policies of secondhand smoke, cigarette advertising and marketing practices and their effects on youth smoking behavior, and the evaluation of tobacco control policies and their impact on youth and adult smoking behavior. His alcohol research has focused on the impact of brand-specific alcohol advertising on youth drinking behavior, and his firearm research spotlights the effect of state firearm laws on state-level gun violence rates. He is a co-author of the book "Marketing Public Health: Strategies for Promoting Health."

Research

Siegel is well-known for his contributions to tobacco control and passive smoking. He has criticized the dismissive claims that brief exposure to secondhand smoke doesn’t increase the risk of heart attacks or present any other significant cardiovascular risk to nonsmokers. Dr. Siegel published a study in 2013 that found that states with higher rates of gun ownership have disproportionately large numbers of deaths from firearm-related homicides. In 2016, he and Emily Rothman published another study in which they discovered a “significant” linkage between gun ownership rates and the rate at which women die from firearm homicide. He has also published research on how the soda industry spends millions of dollars on health organizations while lobbying against public health laws intended to reduce their product consumption.
