Education: What Makes an Essay an Essay

The short and formal pieces of writing encountered in contemporary research have unique features that distinguish essays from other forms of publications. Unlike other documented works, Atwan et al. (197) highlight that essays occur in various sediments isolating such articles from informal texts. One such trait involves the numerous raptures linked to the genre of writing. Essays are different from creative writing because they are technical; the formatting, word structure, and layout of essays differentiate the writing from news reports. The rules regulating essay writing stress the significance of topic sentences at the beginning of every paragraph (Atwan et al., 202). In contrast, newspaper poetries are written in point forms. Whereas, in academic essays, bulleting is a serious offense that exposes writers to penalties or negative reviews of the completed tasks. Even though creative writing is engaging, standard essays are complex based on the demands of publishers.

Novelists have the authority to write whatever they want in any space and format, while essays limit authors to addressing one idea at a time. Mixing ideas in one paragraph is considered unethical and illegal in higher levels of writing. A competent essay writer must guide their readers on their subject topics in single paragraphs with supportive documents. Scripts and essays are dissimilar; counter-arguments are part of standard essays, while the approach of writing lacks scripts. Playwrights focus on theme formulation and character development settings in creating plays, whereas essays concentrate on the facts surrounding particular sentiments (Atwan et al., 225). An essay is different from other types of writing based on its purpose. As informative intellectual pursuits, essays fulfill the persuasive role of convincing readers to believe the ideologies of a writer.

Cheryl Strayed’s, Tiny Beautiful Things class reading has influenced my knowledge of the characteristics of quality essays. I had a different perspective on essay-related tasks. First, I believe that essays are all written papers with references. However, after reading and observing Strayed’s work, I learned that any writing could include a reference page. The difference exists in the strong connection between in-text citations and the primary sources incorporated in writing. Secondly, my view on essays has changed based on Strayed’s provisions of a one-writer antidote. According to the semester’s reading, essays cater to readers’ sentiments (Strayed 331). A few weeks before the semester began, I perceived that essays served and prioritized the interests of writers. Nonetheless, I realized that essays target readers’ emotions and attitudes after attending a third of the semester tutors. The American podcast host (Strayed) extends suspense in her texts to motivate her audience to read the materials.

The lessons gained about writing have impacted my skills as a passionate and promising author in the future. The class material has received positive reviews from my class since it changed the ideology of learners on the definition of essays. Strayed-writing style relates to my definition of essays in the first question throughout her writings. According to the American writer, an essay should have a quality to capture the readers’ interest. Similarly, I recognized an essay as a formal but short writing that allows individuals to express themselves. The capability of writing an essay and allowing others to relate it to their real-life experiences is an extraordinary art that portrays the relationships between Strayed’s book and my definition of essays.

Thesis-driven writing is more of an essay than Paul Graham Green’s writing. Thesis-oriented essays focus on the purpose and announcement of primary arguments, while Green’s writing prioritized themes and innovative styles. Essays are precise notes that guide readers in taking specific positions about arguments. As a result, thesis-driven writings are closely connected to essays that Graham is writing. Essays consider both readers and writers; on the one hand, individuals must have a purpose for writing as a writer. On the other hand, readers must have a flow of any written piece. Thesis-driven essays simplify the isolation of main ideas from secondary information. However, Graham’s writing cares much about themes’ settings even if such contexts lack meaning and purpose to readers. Thesis-driven articles match the standard requirements of essay writing since the works condense the author’s views on manageable scales. Moreover, the inability of Graham’s writing style to concentrate on the key argument makes thesis-oriented documents essays.

Thesis-oriented writing requires more than just an opinion for one to ensure that their voices have an articulation, something that contains in the most outstanding essay writing in history. On the one hand, thesis-driven writing reinforces solid reasoning and proof of ideas. In contrast, Graham’s writing style is not relatable to an essay since the style abandons counterarguments. Instead of identifying the primary sections of writing, Graham’s work relies on the setting of themes irrespective of the arrangement of points in a single paper. In summary, Graham uses short sentences with five words at most, which at first is fine, but the combination of sentences becomes tedious to the reader. In a proper essay, the beginning and the ending sentences should summarize the main points of the piece, a condition that is missing in Paul Graham’s writing. Graham has a style that fails to set the context, making it hard for the reader to formulate a mental map of the overall notion of the piece.

Essay writing should take the pivotal role of communication, enabling an essayist to articulate their sensations, emotions, and information to others. Through this, one can easily document data concerning a specific topic and reflect on their comprehension of the given concept from the essay. The role of essay writing should focus on utilizing critical skills in line with writing skills to develop a well-detailed theme. One that can bring the reader’s perspective into the picture while enlightening them at the same time concerning the topic so that one completely comprehends. Moreover, essay writing should take the responsibility of bringing in the truest, original, changing forms of an author from their imaginative prose and settings, similar to that of Cheryl Strayed.

On the other hand, essay reading has the role of communication, as it is an important way of creating a foundation in one’s life. Essay reading should help articulate one’s imagination, boost one’s perspective of life, and help people gain information on various aspects. Essay reading is essential. Each essay comes with a different concept concerning one’s journey and the origin of their thoughts, which helps readers understand themselves better. Through this, the reading role enables people to comprehend and appreciate the various situations from the comprehensive perspectives provided in the literature. A power that essay readers can appreciate inversely from their perspectives.
