Analysis of Think Critically by Facione & Gittens

The Most Valuable Idea in the Introduction

Not every person tends to reflect on what and how they speak. In the introduction to the fifth chapter, there is a statement about providing a personal opinion too quickly (Facione & Gittens, 2016). I believe this notion holds the most value in the section. It restates the importance of critical thinking for the assessment of incoming information and highlights the subjectivity and plurality of opinions in society.

Difficulties in Undertaking Analysis

To properly analyze anything, one should first make sure he has an understanding of what he is about to investigate. In the fourth chapter, the authors raise the topic of vagueness and ambiguity that can disrupt the interpretation process (Facione & Gittens, 2016). The same is the case with analysis – if the subject is not clear enough, it might cause false assumptions and mislead. Analysis implies constructing a logical chain of conclusions with a solid basis, which is impossible without clarity.

Believing in Beliefs

I believe it is not worth debating over a subject if at least one of the participants does not possess the knowledge level required for the discussion. I think so because, without enough information, a person cannot argue and defend his opinion adequately. Suppose a person cannot provide proper arguments; in that case, he will be left with a variety of unpleasant choices, for example, provision of false statements, blunt denial, or acceptance of a possibly wrong opinion. The first leads to sophistry; the second turns the debate into anything else but debate; the third is detrimental to the self-esteem and general awareness of winning and losing participants. However, in these and other possible outcomes, the debate is deprived of its natural meaning – exchanging opinions and pursuing the objective truth.
