Critical Theory, Postmodern, and Feminist Perspectives

The perspective I am most drawn to is critical theory, which is often used in genealogy or teaching aimed at students who are older adults. Students can have the opportunity for a self-conscious criticism of their lives and encounters as well as chances for critical action through initiatives that employ a critical pedagogical paradigm (Merriam & Baumgartner, 2020). The reason why I am attracted to critical theory is that it helps discover liberation. According to the principles of the perspective, adults must learn how to free themselves from the prevailing mentality, both individually and collectively (Merriam & Baumgartner, 2020).

Moreover, momentarily separating oneself from the impact of others is a revolutionary act since society and individuals impact one another (Merriam & Baumgartner, 2020). Self-paced or customized learning, according to Brookfield, might help students generate rebellious subjectivity. Additionally, the given perspective enables opposing ideologies (Merriam & Baumgartner, 2020). This is the fundamental instrument for teaching adults to transcend the realities of everyday life to disclose the underlying injustice and tyranny. Therefore, as an educator, I find this perspective useful since it can allow me to break the barriers of traditional education and bring more equitable and fair practices.

As for the lessons that most impacted me, these involve the lessons on self-directed learning and approaches to adult learning. The self-directed learning material impacted me the most since it showed me that learning at a self-paced level and without direct supervision can result in positive outcomes for students and can develop a sense of responsibility and independence. The topics I would like to learn more about are transformative learning and the neurobiological approach. I find it fascinating how all individuals are different and might require more customizable teaching methods. I believe that transformative learning material can be helpful when trying to find holistic approaches to teaching. Finally, the learning activity I found most valuable is discussion board posts since they allowed me to connect with my peers and learn more facts regarding education and teaching.
