Discussion: Difficulty and the Discrimination Index

Difficulty and the discrimination index are essential properties in determining the level of relevance of the quiz questions. A properly formed question should be within the abilities of the respondents while not being obvious. Moreover, it is necessary to take into account the difference in the level of knowledge of the quiz respondents since focusing only on one group of answerers will make the quiz irrelevant. Overall, a good question should be balanced in terms of difficulty and comprehensibility for different groups of respondents. The worst questions of this quiz include those that are not balanced enough in their characteristics. For instance, questions 5 and 9 have a very high average score with a minimal discrimination index, suggesting that these questions are excessively easy for all respondents. In addition, questions 7 and 8 also cannot reflect the level of subject understanding as most respondents were able to answer correctly regardless of their proficiency level.

The best questions of this quiz include the most balanced ones. Examples of good questions are items 1, and 2, as the relatively low average grade and high discriminative index indicate that the question is sufficiently difficult. Nevertheless, such questions may be excessively difficult for respondents with moderate knowledge levels. Thus, in terms of accessibility to a wider audience, questions 3 and 4 might be designed more properly. Proper question formulation involves establishing sufficient difficulty for adequate evaluation of the respondents. Therefore, questions with excessive difficulty allow you to identify individuals with a high level of knowledge while not providing an opportunity to assess the level of knowledge of the rest of the participants. In contrast, redundantly easy questions do not allow any of the interviewed categories to be assessed at all.
