Educational Assistant: Roles and Responsibilities

Working as an educational assistant at St. Antony Elementary School, learners acquired a chance to receive aid in their core activities while at school. Remarkably, serving a kindergarten class with a physically disabled student required various documents to make the workload more straightforward and efficient. One of the essential documents needed for the job included a medical form from a recognized healthcare facility reporting on the health conditions of the students, especially the disabled ones. Secondly, to prove the legal accommodation of the disabled student at the school, a formal document showing compliance with the Ontario Human Rights Code must be presented (Ross et al., 2020). In addition, there should be an official academic accommodation document from the school’s office of students with disabilities. Overall, all these documents do not replace the school’s admission documents demanded on the student’s admission day. With a complete package of these documents, the educational assistant can successfully execute their responsibilities.

Primary responsibilities at the school consisted of reinforcing learning practices, supporting students, personal care, conducting medical procedures, and assessing and documenting students’ performance. Educational assistants develop learning strategies and plan to help students obtain relevant skills and concepts. Supporting the students in different dimensions of their operations triggers better learning experiences, such as becoming independent, achieving goals, and improving communication skills; hence, motivating them to become proactive in their studies. Personal care mainly impacts physically impaired students by granting assistance in toileting, dressing, feeding, and personal hygiene (Ross et al., 2020). Physically disabled children undergo regular medical procedures per the medical practitioner’s prescription, which requires another person to aid them in accomplishing them. Such medical routines include insulin administration, testing blood glucose, and tube feeding. Finally, Educational assistants monitor and records learners’ needs, strength, behavior, and achievements during their time in school and report crucial incidents.
