Educational Leadership Models and Research Trends

Introduction

The selected article demonstrates the extent to which various educational leadership models are explored. Gumus et al. (2018) include the evolution of research trends on each model through time, the most renowned scholars working on each model, and the countries where the articles are published.

Discussion

The bibliometric analysis of papers in the Web of Science database between 1980 and 2014 was used to investigate the educational leadership model. Furthermore, using the content analysis approach, Gumus et al. (2018) investigated specific information regarding the methodology, aims, and focus groups of previous research on leadership models. According to the findings, there has been an increase in interest in researching leadership models in educational settings for the last three decades. Furthermore, following the year 2000, there was a considerable increase in awareness. Gumus et al. (2018) acknowledge that this colossal growth might be explained by several causes, including the prevalent trend of globalization, internationally expanding accountability demands, and the accessibility of more powerful statistical methodologies and large databases. Hence, many countries established defined targets to enhance student achievement, emerging in the accountability movement.

In terms of particular leadership models, research studies revealed that distributed leadership, although being a relatively new model, is the most researched model in academic practice. Scholars have also paid close attention to instructional leadership, one of the oldest types of educational leadership. Teacher leadership was the third most researched approach, closely followed by transformational leadership. Moreover, throughout the last two decades, various leadership models, such as “Strategic Leadership, Authentic Leadership, Visionary Leadership, and Servant Leadership,” have emerged as concepts in educational research (Gumus et al., 2018, p. 41).

Conclusion

To conclude, by examining a vast number of publications indexed in the Web of Science database, the study contributes significantly to the research on leadership models in education. The findings have offered insightful information into the advancement of related research and have drawn a large picture based on numerical data. Nonetheless, future review studies should focus on journals that were not included in the analysis.
