Focused Grading: A Technique for Conscious Writing

Student written work can be graded on one criterion when the teacher needs to check for a specific skill. For example, essays or free essays can track the communicative task. The rest of the items, including grammar, formatting, scholarly validity, and style, may not be included in the assessment. However, in order to use this technique, the teacher must be sure that all other skills important within a particular subject have been mastered at a sufficiently basic level and are guaranteed to be present in every student’s work. From the students’ point of view, this technique has the important advantage that they approach writing more consciously. Pupils begin to analyze their work more closely, not as a result of current assignments but as a result of the presence or absence of a certain skill that is important for a particular course. Checking these papers and indicating one specific parameter allows everyone involved in the learning process to understand the significance of the course in terms of practical relevance.

Pointing out student strengths and points of growth is also an effective way to increase awareness of learning. The individual has the opportunity to view the learning process as a development of individual skills and personal progress. Moreover, the teacher’s detailed feedback teaches the student to reflect and analyze himself or herself as a necessary step in his or her education. It is often difficult to maintain objectivity in assessing progress, so an analysis by an experienced person is a good basis for building and adjusting a training plan. From a psychological point of view, a detailed presentation of the strengths and weaknesses of the student is a convergence point that increases the level of trust in the teacher.
