How Poor Communication Impacts the K12 Education System

Organizational culture is best defined as a collection of core values, practices, and expectations that guide employees’ behavior and actions. Organizational culture usually demonstrates the company’s mission, objectives, and goals (Kuo & Tsai, 2019; Odor, 2018). According to Joseph and Kibera (2019), organizational culture is instrumental in determining a company’s performance. Good culture tends to give a competitive advantage as well as financial independence and sustainability. This essay discusses poor communication as an organizational cultural issue that impacts the k to 12 education system and its progress.

Poor communication can occur in different ways, including the channel of communication, effective communication skills, or even the media used in communication. Poor communication channel occurs when the hierarchy of communication is not followed, thus affecting the productivity of others or initiating positional disrespect among colleagues. When one lacks effective communication skills, they tend to disregard effective use of etiquette, resulting in disrespect that affects teamwork.

Human beings are emotional creatures, and it means that without employing proper communication skills, relationships can be destroyed and the desired outcome not achieved. Additionally, when discussing media of communication, the intended message determines the media be used (Radovic Markovic & Salamzadeh, 2018). In the educational setup, professionalism is demonstrated by reputable media like emails or zoom calls. It gives a sense of seriousness and urgency, unlike when social media is used.

In the educational sector, communication is vital, especially when relaying information between colleagues or crossectional between staff and students. Poor communication creates a hostile and unpleasant work environment. Studies have indicated that poor communication is associated with harassment, increased employee turnover, underproductivity, and bullying. Identification of poor communication requires an analytical team to obtain data from personnel or students using surveys with friendly questions and that give anonymous reports.

Common communication barriers include fear of juniors communicating to their leaders, lack of understanding between the company and employees regarding the priorities at hand, failure of an organization to articulate clear goals to employees, and confusion about their roles and responsibilities (Shrivastava, 2021). Educational institutions need to streamline their communication structure. This will not only ensure that staff work as a team but also ensure that all stakeholders understand what is expected of them and gain the confidence to share ideas and get clarification when needed.
