Parental Support Strategies for Student Participation in Extracurricular Activities

Introduction

An extracurricular activity is one that students participate in that is not part of their regular course of study at their school, college, or university. These activities frequently involve people of the same age and are typically voluntary (as opposed to required), sociable, and charitable. The most significant benefit of participating in at least one of these activities is the decrease in anti-social behaviors and students growing up to be more successful in communication and relationships (Al-Ansari et al., 2016).

Being involved in extracurricular activities lowers the likelihood of dropping out of school and the likelihood of committing a criminal offense and leads to higher education retention, success, and achievements in schoolwork (Jeynes, 2018). The aim of this proposal is to instruct parents on how to assist and encourage their kids to participate in such activities and how to educate them on how to do so, inspire them, and give them an interactive support system.

Objectives

The objectives of this proposal would be:

  1. To persuade parents to support their children in finding and participating in such activities.
  2. Assisting them in estimating the boundaries of their children, discovering a hobby that their youngster enjoys, make them sign up for clubs or groups as soon as they begin school, as well as, improving academic performance through extracurricular activities.

Due to various factors, such as being an introvert or feeling nervous about admitting they have a particular interest, students occasionally choose not to engage in such activities. Some of these factors are as following: typically, people believe they need more talent, they prioritize academics above all else and disregard extracurricular activities as a result.

Plan of Actions

  1. Gather materials.
  2. Find experts and form a contract with them.
  3. Conduct an online seminar with experts. The parents will be notified one month in advance. The meeting will be conducted online using suitable presentation software (Zoom or MS Team).
  4. Do a survey.

A survey among students will be then conducted to see whether it was successful and had an impact after some time has passed, and the kids have had a chance to partake in one or more activities.

Material Distribution

There are numerous strategies and subareas for improving kids’ participation in extracurricular activities. Among them are:

Spending Time with Their Children

Kids typically imitate their parents because their parents are the children’s primary teachers (Al-Ansari et al., 2016). In light of this, parents can engage in various activities with their children, such as swimming, playing a sport, or taking music lessons. The child will begin engaging in the action after observing their parents having fun with it. However, parents need to ensure their kids do not let their children participate in their favorite hobbies. It would be even better if the parents could involve the child’s peers or cousins. For the child, group activities are always preferable and more enjoyable.

Studies, Time, and Reward

Do not expect the child to achieve academic perfection. It is only standard that extracurricular activities would eat up some of their study time. Parents must realize that if the child is involved in other activities besides doing relatively well, everything is fine. Parents assisting their children in scheduling time for homework and extracurricular activities would be beneficial (Boonk et al., 2018). Parents should encourage youngsters to investigate actions by incorporating them into their daily lives. If administered correctly, rewards and incentives can be helpful. Make sure the child does not believe he will receive compensation for every accomplishment, no matter how big or tiny, since if he does, he will work harder to attain goals for the reward rather than for himself.

Conclusion

Parents have a responsibility to motivate their kids to engage in these activities. By conducting an online conference including renowned speakers, dispersing materials the gap will be closed. This will assist the parents in learning what activities their child enjoys and how best to handle them. The survey will be than conducted to understand the work better and produce significantly better outcomes the following time.
