Special Education Teachers and Their Roles

The teacher can act as an individual tutor and assistant. Such a tutor will do homework with the child, accompany him/her to school, and make sure that he/she is not bullied. The teacher can be a consultant to the class teacher (Special education teachers: Occupational outlook handbook: U.S. bureau of labor statistics, 2021). It is relevant for inclusion classes, in which children with special needs and ordinary children study together. The teacher can be an educational evaluator, and then he will make adjustments to the programs for special schools and classes. Such a teacher does not often work directly with children. At the same time, he/she is aware of all the procedures and needs of such students.

Special education teachers can work primarily with parents; these counselors help parents understand the needs of their child. Parents help their children and buy some equipment and literature required for learning. Teachers can also collaborate with child psychologists; psychologists will work with anxious and fearful children and will also be able to resolve conflicts between children and adolescents. They will help the child establish communication with peers, and it does not matter whether peers suffer from disorders. Teachers can collaborate with school principals who manage the budget (Special education teachers: Occupational outlook handbook: U.S. bureau of labor statistics, 2021). Principals may arrange trips and sports activities for these children.

Special education teachers advocate and protect students from unfair treatment by peers and some teachers. Conflicts, bullying, and child abuse are still found in schools; unfortunately, children with disabilities cannot often protect themselves. Teachers sometimes tend to ignore the special needs of children, justifying this by saying that they do not want to single out anyone so as not to arrange competitions. In addition, special education teachers advocate for their students with their parents (Special education teachers: Occupational outlook handbook: U.S. bureau of labor statistics, 2021). Parents need explanations and justification for why their child should be treated in this or that way; and why this technique can help.
