Analyzing of the PLOP for a Student

By analyzing the PLOP for a student with a specific learning disability, it is possible to get a clear understanding of him as a student. From an academic perspective, Sam demonstrates excellent knowledge in reading decoding skills. However, as a fifth-grade student, Sam has the independent reading level as a third-grade level, which highlights the need to improve his basic reading skills that are crucial to developing his literacy. Sam shows an increased interest in Math by being best at simple, straightforward math calculations where a calculator can be used to complete the task. Due to the adverse impact of his learning disability diagnosis, it is complicated for Sam to perform the basic mechanics of writing, completing the sentences and low writing speed in particular. Therefore, considering the goals areas needed, the educator should continue to teach phonics and other reading strategies to improve Sam’s independent reading skills. Also, direct instruction can be applied by writing down a sentence to explain the topic. By implementing the visual imagery or paraphrasing, the teacher might improve the student’s focus and a better understanding of the assignment.

Considering the behavioral aspect of Sam, he is good at emotional control but needs to enhance his working memory. This can be achieved through the strategy instruction method, along with materials to advance working memory, focus, and organization, such as sticky notes, highlighters, and graphic organizers. By working in small groups, Sam can keep his focus on the specific task and maintain adequate social communication. In addition, the involved student support services in the collaborative learning team support Sam’s overall study process. Most importantly, it is vital to create a positive and equal environment to encourage Sam and other students with a learning disability to set goals, make choices, and understand the value of self-determination. Such strategies are critical elements in Sam’s both social and academic development since they might promote his transition into adulthood.
