Digital Research Tools and Challenges in Studying Social Media and Education

Background

The world constantly evolves, introducing numerous innovations across all areas of human life. Education is one aspect of activity that has undergone significant change due to emerging technologies. Previously, students had to search for the information they needed by looking through numerous books and finding exactly what was relevant to them. However, the modern world has made this task much easier by providing numerous online resources that offer access to essential books and texts (Bryson, n.d.). The Internet has become a vital aspect of education, enabling people to easily access the knowledge they need.

Context

Finding information for my research project was no problem. Many services, such as books and academic articles, can provide full access to the information you need. To find the data I needed, I used Google Scholar. The main research question in this case concerns information retrieval systems and may be phrased as follows: Why must we use technology and social media in teaching if they can cause mental health issues?

To conduct such a study, it is essential to consider the advantages and disadvantages of utilizing social media for educational purposes. A vital search tool in my work has become the Wayback Machine, which archives most of the data on the Internet and makes it available to people for various purposes. This site can handle various types of data, including audio, video, and different document formats (Lazorcak, 2012). This way, I can access articles and texts that were deleted some time ago but still have research value.

Challenges

When searching for necessary information, one of the main challenges is interpreting sources. Determining whether something is primary or secondary can be quite challenging and requires a detailed analysis. In the primary source, the information differs because it comes from people directly involved in the research topic.

At the same time, a secondary source means the data were processed by other scientists, who may have interpreted them in their own way (Library Web Team, 2012). Additionally, there are difficulties associated with the fact that many necessary resources can be accessed only through specific requests or are blocked (White papers, n.d.). When searching for information, I often found high-quality, necessary resources, but could not use them because they were behind a paywall.
