Learning Academic Writing: Outcomes

Learning how to properly set up academic papers is a crucial skill. Writing an assignment is one of the key expertise in any educational setting. First, it is vital to have an understanding of the concept of structuring the information that will be used in the paper. This skill is essential since choosing the necessary information and having the ability to properly organize it for a cohesive train of thought ensures that the text is coordinated. Moreover, the class was useful in regards to studying the importance of annotations and the proper way to use them. Adding necessary annotations allows the evidence to be adequately illustrated and explained in detail. It is certain that the gained knowledge is not only helpful in academic settings but also in various situations in regard to personal, professional, and social life.

This course, while useful at the moment, provided crucial information that will be used during the following courses. The first capacity that will be helpful for future assignments is the skill to develop an essay. This includes knowing how to selectively pick the right information, how to showcase it in different paragraphs, and how to properly begin and end the essay. The assignments that will be written for the subsequent courses will have a cohesive structure with introductions, paragraphs, and conclusions based on the general writing rules. Having a set of guidelines helps the written assignment be well-planned in regards to arguments, well-balanced in terms of objectivity vs. subjectivity, and effectively communicated through words.

Moreover, the skill that will be helpful is the ability to research scholarly sources to support the arguments. Paul and Criado (2020) specifically mention the importance of selecting literature to strengthen personal overviews and arguments. It is vital to have reliable supporting arguments that align with the initial topic that will be touched upon in the essay. Another skill that will be included in the following classes is the knowledge of how to communicate ideas through various types of essays. An example is writing argumentative essays. The current knowledge allows for such assignments to have the proper structure, ideas, and concepts. According to researchers, argumentative essays are constructed based on persuasive arguments (Ho & Li, 2018). The knowledge received during the course confirms this statement. Based on the type of assignment, the current knowledge allows for the essay to fit the criteria established in the given instructions or suggestions.

The concepts learned during the course are not only useful in the academic setting but also helpful in other situations related to future jobs, personal life, and community-based socialization. The fundamental aspects of communication are closely linked to the skills gained during the learning process. In terms of future jobs, the current knowledge will be useful in engaging in work-related correspondence, communicating with colleagues, and forming professional relationships. Since academic writing involves a high level of communication abilities while using proper language, such skills will positively influence communication with future co-workers. Moreover, it is essential to mention the gained information that will contribute to effective correspondence with the leaders or the organization.

In terms of knowledge that can be used in an informal setting at home, communication is also an essential concept that helps mitigate conflicts and view a situation from different perspectives. When writing an essay, it is sometimes helpful to include counterarguments. A similar strategy is necessary for personal conversations when it may be challenging to look at someone’s opinion without being subjective. The transferable skills are also beneficial for interacting with various members of a community. The course teaches how to look at data objectively and form opinions based on evidence rather than personal overviews. In terms of interactions with different individuals, it is vital to be unbiased and understand that there are multiple possible opinions to one single subject or issue.

The course also provided information on how to use Biblical perspectives, which is an excellent way to have a different overview on any topic discussed in essays. For example, the Holy Bible highlights the importance of diligence in regards to realizing initial plans. This quote provides a new perspective that can be applied in many fields, including writing, communication, and externalizing ideas through words. Having a Biblical perspective provides a new overview of the idea initially implemented in the thesis. An essay may be based on subjective points of view, scientific data, statistics, new research published in journals, etc.

Including Bible verses to either support an argument or dismiss it is a way of using sources to contribute to a full picture in a written text. Moreover, applying Biblical perspectives may be viewed as having a second opinion, especially if used as counterarguments. Since it is important to look at an idea from different angles, adding Bible verses can have the role of a contrasting viewpoint. On the other hand, this can also be a supporting argument. Either way, the texts are complete and full in terms of different opinions due to the use of Bible references.
