Children grow and develop quickly, and parents closely monitor the various milestones that indicate that the child is healthy. Milestones can be different, for example, learning to walk or recognition from peers, and for each age, these steps are special. One of the milestones for the second grade (seven years old children) is reading simple texts and understanding what has been read (Sullivan, 2019). Mastering these skills is essential for the child’s further intellectual success and facilitating their involvement in the reading process.
Educators work carefully with their students that they could become proficient in reading. However, students cannot have the same abilities, and some may need additional help. Snyder and Golightly (2017) devoted an article to a reading improvement issue – “The efficiency of a balanced approach to reading intervention in a second grade student: A case study.” Researchers studied the effect of phonics and whole-language interventions on the reading abilities of a second-grade student who had difficulties. The inclusion of these interventions is crucial for a balanced and comprehensive approach. As a result of the intervention, decoding skills and pronunciation of sounds improved (Snyder & Golightly, 2017). The article proves the effectiveness of balanced interventions for reading in children.
I consider the article as very informative for the topic of the reading development milestone among second-graders. The authors examined the literature, conducted the study, and presented positive results. I also find the article helpful, especially for understanding the basics of reading skills and risk factors leading to problems in children. Moreover, the method used will be valuable to help other children with difficulties. Success in mastering reading skills is critical for their further education and success in future professional development.
