Assessment helps to understand the pupils’ abilities, capacities, and type of thinking. They are valuable tools for maintaining a shared understanding of disciplines. The variability of assessment has led to the creation of uniform grading rules. Assessments create opportunities for children to develop at their own pace and to the best of their ability. Formal specialized assessment is based on objective data about academic performance. Students with disabilities are assessed the same way as other children. Informal assessments are specific assessments based on communication style and mechanics (quizzes and projects).
Formal assessments include age-based assessments: the ability to read and write at age 7-8 (tests). Informal ones include the child’s communication skills, behavior, and cognitive development; for formal assessments there are the amount of material the student has spent studying. Interpretation of these assessments is made by comparing norms and qualities (Colman, 2022). Informal is done by direct communication and recording speech or behavioral traits during the evaluation process. All academic performance assessments are subjected to legal and ethical considerations. The teacher’s salary is based on the students’ academic scores, which present a significant legal issue. Furthermore, sometimes teachers can reduce grading points for late work depending on their ethics.
The assessment information is used to provide access to additional learning materials. The program is calculated based on the quantity and quality of the student’s work and the formation of plans for further development. Placement is formed based on dividing students into groups to achieve the learning goals. The school specialist interprets the information based on the child’s individual characteristics. For students eligible for special education services the accommodations can include movement breaks or extended time for assignments and tests. Thus, accommodations for students with disabilities will allow them to increase their focus on learning (Colman, 2022). Teachers should properly notify students about results and explain them using such communication strategies as objective notification without personal coloring and respectful transmission of information and support to students.
I have found for my future practice that fairness is fundamental element of assessment. Specific contexts enable the management of the assessment system and the use of formal and informal assessments. Using the support and caring strategies shows a positive dynamic, making it easier for children to adapt despite any difficulties. In future work, I want to implement strategies for the confidentiality of information about the learning outcomes.
