Introduction
The quality and structure of education often determine young people’s learning experiences and prospects in work and life. Therefore, selecting the best way to organize students’ curriculum is essential. The debate continues between two strategies – giving learners fewer or more options when picking their desired subjects. Some individuals advocate for more freedom of choice, defined as self-regulated or self-directed learning (EstĂ©vez et al., 2021).
However, others consider making an entirely compulsory curriculum, with no options to skip or change subjects (Merrill and Gosner, 2021). The present paper argues that learning should not be compulsory or restricted and that, from the start of secondary school, young people should be able to pick subjects according to their own needs and wishes. Therefore, it is necessary to discuss student motivation and engagement, career-training preparedness, and personal growth among youth through the lens of educational psychology and sociological perspectives.
Motivation and Engagement
The ability to choose academic subjects provides students with an opportunity to participate in the beginning stages of the learning process, which engages them and increases motivation to study. According to Kiser (2020), student choice, from picking learning styles and activities to constructing their own study schedule, positively affects their interest in education. Additionally, a study investigating students’ choice of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) subjects shows that allowing young learners to choose STEM subjects increases the number of people interested in these fields (Mellander and Lind, 2021).
In contrast, if students are taught math and other STEM classes in a compulsory program, they are less likely to engage and continue their education in this sphere in the future (Mellander and Lind, 2021). Learners who are encouraged to pursue their passions are more inclined to attend classes and complete assignments, as the tasks align with their personal interests. Furthermore, their understanding of the subject will likely be strengthened by their desire to learn more. Using young people’s curiosity and interests increases their motivation to learn and improves their academic performance, thus providing a strong argument supporting choice flexibility.
Career Preparedness
Apart from supporting personal academic interests, freedom of choice allows students to create a curriculum that may help their future career development. Students who are curious about a particular subject may also pursue careers related to their passions, and education can help them achieve their career goals. Quinlan and Renninger (2022) argue that students’ engagement with the subjects they choose determines whether they are likely to choose a specific occupation. Thus, learners may choose subjects that directly help them apply to colleges or start work in their fields of interest.
Selecting appropriate classes early may allow young people to prepare for higher levels of education and to assess whether their skills and personal characteristics are compatible with their desired careers (Quinlan and Renninger, 2022). The freedom of choice also streamlines the learning process, as students focus on what they may need in the future, which balances the amount of information they must consume daily (Pros and cons, no date). As a result, the choice of subjects provides young people with a path to build careers and succeed in their jobs.
Personal Responsibility, Time Management, and Prioritization
The third argument supporting self-directed learning is that students’ ability to choose increases their personal qualities, such as responsibility, time management, prioritization, and other soft skills. If students attend classes they did not choose, they do not need to decide which is more critical to their future success. In contrast, selecting subjects raises the question of which areas of study may be essential to their continued education and work (Burbules, Fan, and Repp, 2020). Interviews with young learners show that they enjoy the increased responsibility because they feel valued and respected by the school, which allows them to pick subjects that prompt them to think about their long-term goals (Quinlan and Renninger, 2022).
Furthermore, students must learn to structure their days when creating a study schedule, which positively contributes to their prioritization and time management skills (Merrill and Gosner, 2021). Overall, giving young people more options also places greater responsibility on them, combining knowledge acquisition with life skills. Learners creating their own learning plans must consider short-term and long-term objectives.
Opposing View: Limited Outlook
Although studies discuss various benefits of choice flexibility in learning, one counterargument is that students who choose subjects do not broaden their worldview. According to Rehmani (2024), students are only interested in learning what they want to know about select subjects, which may not introduce them to new topics that are also useful. For instance, a person interested in humanitarian subjects may focus on history or language, rather than on science. Similarly, young people invested in technology and science may skip courses on literature and art, which can foster their creative side. As a result, these learners may fail to acquire knowledge that represents a different perspective and allows them to engage in more advanced critical thinking (Rehmani, 2024).
In contrast, a compulsory curriculum that integrates different subjects offers students an opportunity to learn about various areas, widening their outlook on the world and showing its variety. Therefore, giving students a choice of subjects limits their chances of becoming well-rounded people.
Rebuttal: Choices Invite Exploration
The argument that a range of subjects should be presented to students is not erroneous, but making young people study subjects that they do not want may not help them develop diverse skills. For instance, a study by Mellander and Lind (2021) found that adding more mathematics classes as a compulsory part of the curriculum to increase interest in STEM had the opposite effect. Fewer students were engaged in the new subject than before the program was implemented (Mellander and Lind, 2021). It is likely that the learners were overwhelmed with the course and did not choose to pursue math further. While a range of subjects is necessary for developing critical thinking, students acquire some basic knowledge of these subjects in primary school.
Furthermore, the curriculum likely includes some fundamental subjects to continue learners’ understanding of core disciplines, such as math and language. It is also possible that students select subjects based on college requirements, which often require a combination of subjects. The ability to choose invites young learners to explore various fields, thereby shaping their worldview.
Opposing View: Too Many Choices
Another possible argument against self-directed learning is that too many types of classes and subjects are currently offered to students, which decreases engagement and leads to confusion. Some individuals believe that learners who are offered the opportunity to select their classes experience high levels of stress because they must plan their days, weeks, and semesters (Rehmani, 2024). Furthermore, they may not know which classes are the best or the most valuable.
The number of available subjects may create confusion and lower motivation to learn or participate, as students do not know what they need to learn to succeed (Pros and cons, no date). A curriculum that offers a range of subjects is selected by professionals who know the basic skills necessary for most professions. Acquiring a broad knowledge of the most important subjects and not focusing on any particular field prepares young people to continue working or learning any profession in depth in the future. Therefore, choosing subjects harms students’ prospects and increases negative perceptions of school education.
Rebuttal: Choices Limit Stress
Schools offer a variety of classes to encourage students to participate in the educational process. While complex curricula may confuse students, greater choice flexibility reduces negative thinking, according to research (Quinlan and Renninger, 2022). Self-directed learning allows young people to develop their own approach to completing classes and to decide which skills they consider most important. Furthermore, while they can choose courses, the quality of education depends on how the educational institution delivers material and engages students (Filgona et al., 2020).
Therefore, the school must also introduce options that do not add to students’ stress. Beyond that, a curriculum spanning multiple subjects may lead to greater stress among young people. The lack of motivation will likely reduce their productivity and disengage them, leading to poor academic performance and frustration (Filgona et al., 2020). As noted above, students’ own recollections demonstrate that young people welcome a level of responsibility and are prepared to make choices in a school environment (Quinlan and Renninger, 2022). Thus, the presence of choices does not necessarily lead to stress in all situations, and institutions must ensure that students understand their options well.
Conclusion
To sum up, students should be allowed to choose the academic subjects they want to study when they enter secondary school. First, the flexibility of choice increases their motivation and helps them feel engaged in the learning process, as young people choose subjects they are interested in. Second, individual curricula prepare learners for their future professions by introducing them to the necessary skills and knowledge and by showing whether certain careers are a good fit. Third, the presence of choices teaches young individuals responsibility and shows them how to prioritize and manage their time.
Some people may argue that self-directed learning does not teach children everything they need and increases stress. Nonetheless, research shows that students choose a wide range of subjects, explore more, and feel more accomplished when given more freedom. Thus, this work matters because it investigates how educational systems influence individual development and social outcomes. Advocating for topic choice in secondary school allows students to design their own learning experience, encouraging social mobility and justice. Overall, the study adds to conversations about education, agency, and societal transformation.
