A Literacy Skill Improvement Plan

Plan Development

In developing a plan for improving literacy, it is necessary to provide time in the curriculum to work with the textbook and additional educational materials. This part of the lesson will include all areas where the child’s attention is focused on learning English as a subject and not as a means of communication. The introduction of such a format does not need additional development and can follow a standard curriculum. The study of the alphabet, phonetics, and grammar should be diluted with more exciting activities to avoid losing the focus of Jorge’s attention.

One of the aspects of the plan is to watch children’s films and cartoons in English. This method will contribute to the development of listening skills necessary for everyday communication. Constantly hearing simple grammatical constructions, the child will begin to learn them and quickly apply in real life. The effectiveness, practicality, and appropriateness components should be considered when selecting video material (Damayanti, 2020). Another point of the plan is to learn children’s rhymes and poems with Jorge. Such activity is perfect for a child due to age and will help him replenish his vocabulary with simultaneous memory training. This method can be presented as part of the reading format and part of the game format, where a simple wordplay will serve as the designation of a new round. The constant use of phrases will expand vocabulary and help get used to using the language in everyday life.

According to his father, Jorge’s interest can be supported by talking about trucks and dinosaurs. However, this does not mean that the lessons and training vocabulary topics should be reduced to these subjects. In theory, the range of interests can be introduced into classes directly and indirectly through topics or tools such as films and games. The teacher can expand the area of interest by probing neighboring themes. For example, talking about the extinction of dinosaurs after the fall of meteorites, the teacher may start with a theme of space and look at Jorge’s reaction. While talking about trucks, the teacher may also try to switch to other means of transport, such as trains or planes.

Self-Evaluation

The evaluation of the plan is based on its effectiveness and the ability to interest the child, stimulating him to study the language further. The curriculum includes fundamental academic work with additional materials to improve the theory of grammar knowledge. Thanks to this, the child can systematize the information received and simplify the task of mastering a communication skill in the future. In priority, theoretical analysis of grammatical constructions will help him master the knowledge of basic English by the beginning of the next year.

Additional classes conducted in the format of games and watching movies will develop Jorge’s communication skills. During the lesson, the child will master the ability to speak fluently using basic vocabulary and grammatical constructions and understand peers’ speech. Moreover, this class format will help create a comfortable atmosphere for learning English. The child will not have negative associations that slow down the learning process and interfere with the concentration of attention on the material being studied. Involving the boy in games will also help establish relationships with other children in the group, and communication with whom will contribute to developing English skills.

Such a combination of interest and efficiency will lead to high results for the child in obtaining literacy knowledge. Since the most comfortable environment will be created for the child, in which he will be able to combine his interests with the acquisition of skills, training effectiveness will be maintained at a high level. The final assessment can be given before the child enters kindergarten when the results will be clearly noticeable. At the moment, the plan reveals itself well in the format of efficiency and increased motivation in training.
