Ethical norms often become a tool that controls the relationship between individuals. On the example of several situations, it is possible to make out what kind of contribution certain norms make in regulating the consumption and potential choice of the individual. When it comes to the relationship between a psychologist and a client, it is important to take the side of the complete confidentiality of everything that happens. For ethical reasons, individuals share personal, intimate information that could potentially become defamatory to the general public. Therefore, it makes sense for the psychologist to agree to complete confidentiality of any therapy.
Nevertheless, despite the fact that the psychologist, in accordance with ethical standards, should be on the side of the patient, non-standard situations may arise. For example, a patient may ask for help to die, in which case it is against state law. The fact is that a person’s life is much more important, and a psychologist cannot go beyond his competence, deciding the fate of a person. This example shows that ethical standards go hand in hand with professional ones. If the client tells the psychologist about a murder committed at some time, but is left without the knowledge of law enforcement agencies, then the specialist faces a difficult choice. Nevertheless, in this case, it would be ethically correct to report this to the police, since we are again talking about the life of a person and a citizen. In the situation of having a colleague who is blaming incriminating facts about employees to the boss, it is important to note that she violates ethical norms based on mutual respect. In other words, such an individual devalues ​​and deliberately puts other workers at a disadvantage for personal gain.
The relationship between the student-teacher forms also belongs to the topic of professional relations. Any communication between two individuals, in this case, is encouraged, but controlled by ethical standards, in particular, subordination. Accordingly, romantic relationships directly violate such principles. In order not to exceed the authority, the teacher must ignore any potential hints from the student. If a situation arises where the teacher ignores the student’s gender self-determination, then, in this case, the specialist violates ethical standards. The fact is that one of the principles is respect for the individual and his rights, non-violation of personal boundaries. In this case, regardless of official papers, the teacher must take into account the student’s self-identification.
