Human Subjects Training for Health Information Technology Students

Evolving Concern: Protecting Human Subjects Training

The training provided me with a better understanding of human subject research. In particular, I was able to understand the regulations, guidelines as well as standards that define criteria for carrying out a research study and human subjects’ participation. Besides, I was able to understand the crucial role played by IRBs in overseeing all the behavioral clinical and biomedical research that includes human subjects.

Other stakeholders who also play an integral role in this respect include some government agencies such as OHRP (Office for human research protection board) and clinical investigators. I was made to understand that IRBs are administrative entities initiated by institutions to safeguard the ethical rights of those individuals who take part in a given research study. These IRBs play an integral role in reviewing research procedures as well as approving or disapproving research activities.

Of significant importance in this training is the understanding that it is critical to protect the rights of the subject as well as respect their human dignity. The subjects should be informed fully on the objectives of the research, the benefits the subject as a result of participating in the research, the status of the medication he/she is about to be administered as well the subjects’ right to withdraw from the research study at any time and will. Besides, the training proved significant due to the understanding that if the life of the subject is at risk, the investigator ought to discontinue the research immediately.

The investigator should also obtain informed consent from the subject before the subject is allowed to take part in the proposed research. The training highlights the legal consequences of the investigator’s failure to protect and respect the life of the subject. Researchers can face legal actions if proved to have violated the rights of the subjects or caused harm to the subjects in the course of carrying out the research study.

The cons of this training are attributed to the fact that it consumes a lot of time before the IRBs approve the proposal of the researcher and affects the timeline of the investigator. However, overall, the pros so far outweigh the cons in this training.

Value of the Training to One’s Career

Indeed, this training was of great importance to the general development of my career. In particular, this training will provide a good foundation for my future research. I will be able to take into consideration the regulations, guidelines as well as standards that define the criteria for carrying out a research study and human subjects’ participation. In the course of my career, I will understand the importance of safeguarding the rights of the subject as well as respecting their human dignity. In my future research, I will make sure that the subjects are informed fully on the objectives of the research, the benefits of the subject as a result of participating in the research.

The Belmont Report: Basic Ethical Principles and Their Application

Ethics in research are observed to ensure that the researcher throughout the research does not engage in harmful activities. Ethical research is conducted in a manner that ensures utmost objectivity, integrity, confidentiality, intellectual property, competencies, and human subject protections are upheld. The researcher conducted according to the ethical code of research ensures that results are credible and valid.

The researcher must submit the draft manuscript and questionnaire or any other instruments to be used in the research to the ethics committee before beginning the data collection phase to ascertain that they meet the required ethical standards and they are approved. The researcher must only obtain information from a respondent once he/she consented to be part of the research. His/her identity and information obtained must be treated with high levels of secrecy and confidentiality, and cannot be divulged to any party or used for any other purpose apart from this research. Moreover, a research participant must be allowed to voluntarily withdraw at any point of the research.

Balancing Society’s Mandates: Criteria for Protocol Review

The research protocols s outline the steps that will be taken to conduct the research study. It is a critical section as it aids the researcher to focus on the research process of data collection, data analysis to achieve the research aims of the study. The IRBs must ensure that the protocols submitted by an investigator are of acceptable standards.
