Reinforcement Schedules in Education for Enhanced Student Motivation

Introduction

The success of education typically relies on the interaction between teachers and students, making the learners’ behavior and perception of the learning process an important aspect of acquiring new knowledge. Therefore, maintaining a positive attitude and student compliance during classes is an important task that can improve the quality of education. This goal can be achieved through schedules of reinforcement, which outline different methods for rewarding students for desired behavior. The paper analyzes the prevalent types of such schedules and their practical value in the learning process, based on available data.

Jan’s Schedule of Reinforcement Analysis

Implementing behavioral modification during study can significantly affect a student’s learning abilities. Martin & Pear (2019) outline a case in which a 13-year-old math student named Jan was subjected to a reinforcement schedule, which resulted in a gradual positive dynamic in her understanding of the subject. The method used was a fixed-ratio (FR) schedule, which rewards the individual for each solved problem. FR schedule produces a high, steady rate of desired behavior that may increase over time and allows predicting the length of the post-reinforcement pause. However, this method may not allow for an abrupt increase in demands without producing ratio strain and possesses a lower resistance to extinction than other methods.

Key Concepts of Behavioral Modification in Education

The three important concepts in behavioral modification are schedules of reinforcement, continuous reinforcement, and intermittent reinforcement. According to Martin & Pear (2019), the schedule of reinforcement specifies which occurrence of a student’s desired behavior is to be reinforced. Examples may include different types of this schedule, such as continuous reinforcement. Continuous reinforcement is a method that rewards every occurrence of a certain behavior to reinforce it (Martin & Pear, 2019).

For example, in Jan’s case, continuous reinforcement would entail rewarding the student for each problem solved. The opposite of this method is intermittent reinforcement, which only rewards desired behavior occasionally rather than constantly. For example, if a student receives approval from the teacher for certain completed tasks, but not for each one in the same category.

Fixed-Interval Schedule

A fixed-interval (FI) schedule is one of the types of reinforcement schedules that specify how often the reward for desirable behavior is delivered. Martin & Pear (2019) emphasize that the FI schedule reinforces the first instance after a specified interval has elapsed since the previous reinforcement, using fixed-interval schedules. Using this method, a teacher might give praise to a student for solving a problem daily or weekly, depending on the desired outcome. Overall, this type of schedule may result in a gradually increasing response rate.

The Use of Simple Interval Schedules in Training Programs

Simple interval schedules, comprising fixed-interval and varied-interval (VI) types, are uncommon in training programs for several reasons. As noted by Martin & Pear (2019), the FI response rate is acceptable, yet it also elicits post-reinforcement pauses in students. On the contrary, VI does not have such drawbacks but has a lower response rate than other methods, making it less efficient. Moreover, regular monitoring of the resulting behavior is needed when using FI or VI schedules until a response is detected. These factors make simple interval schedules less likely to be used if other methods are available.

The case study of a student named Jan demonstrated the effectiveness of a fixed-ratio schedule in an educational setting, resulting in a steady response and increased learning.
