Specific Sensory Techniques and Modifications for Children

I believe that the topic presented in the article is highly significant and relevant to aspiring nurses and people who wish to understand children better. I also think that the paper does an excellent job of clearly articulating the signs and symptoms of the sensory integration difficulties. Frequently, when encountering an active child, one might think of such behavior as common and act carelessly. However, it is possible that the child has sensory integration problems, and, therefore, requires a particular approach. The article increases the awareness of potential risks that accompany active interaction with children and also provides corresponding guidelines.

Personally, I have never worked with children that have SI problems; nevertheless, I can imagine that one should be particularly careful when interacting with such youths. According to Bodison and Parham (2017), the number of children in the kindergartner age with SI issues is equal to about five percent. It implies that in a room with more than twenty children, there is at least one who needs special attention. Having this in mind, I intend to be extra careful when interacting with children and follow the guidelines stated in the article.

First of all, I plan to be more moderate in my communication with the children to minimize overstimulation and be more conscious of their behavior. It is essential to continually monitor their conditions and act accordingly if someone looks highly uncomfortable. Naturally, SI disorders are not the only issues that a child might experience; however, I believe that if one is acting peculiarly compared to other children – it is a potential sign for interference. According to the article, the primary symptoms of SI difficulties that might be noticeable in behavior are out-of-proportion reactions to sensory stimuli and problems with movement and body awareness. These signs are quite easy to notice, and I will constantly keep them in mind during the interaction with children.
