Writing is a primary skill that is usually obtained through an educational course. Specifically, writing an essay is a standard part of various tests for students, including their examinations. An essay is a particular form of writing that implies following specific requirements while working on it. According to Okono (2020), a well-written essay must have “some salient qualities or characteristics that will make it rich in content and style” (p. 82). There are several straightforward steps in writing an effective examination essay. Following those steps is a perfect way to ensure the high quality of an essay and increase the chances of receiving a particular mark.
First, it is vital to understand that the assessment of an essay is also a step-by-step process. If a person knows how their essay will be evaluated, they know how to write it correctly. The first step in writing a qualitative examination essay is making it as close as possible to the required word count (Stonehouse, 2018). Then, the work’s structure should be considered since formats may differ depending on the essay type (Stonehouse, 2018).
Some other “technical” elements of the essay, such as avoiding first-person pronouns, absence of plagiarism, proper referencing, and spelling and grammar, are also essential (Stonehouse, 2018). However, I believe that the most crucial step in writing an effective examination essay is following its marking criteria. According to Stonehouse (2018), it is “an important document which sets out what you need to do to gain a certain mark” (p. 294). The marking criteria are the most significant element of writing an essay because each assignment may have specific requirements regarding format, style, content, and other writing aspects. Addressing those requirements is necessary to ensure the essay’s quality.
