First, strategies help students to apply their background knowledge to complete their school tasks or accomplish non-academic goals (“Using learning strategies to enhance student learning,” 2020). Second, strategies allow students to bypass weakness areas, increasing their level of performance. Third, strategies encourage flexible thinking and independent learning (“Learning strategies,” 2020).
Characteristics of strategic learners differ to a great extent from those who take a non-strategic approach. According to “Learning strategies” (2020), on the one hand, strategic learners are in full capacity to analyze an issue, developing a plan to resolve the problem. They are also able to organize multiple goals simultaneously, switching from simple to more complex objectives, exhibiting flexibility. Strategic learners can apply background knowledge to the new tasks and develop novel strategies as the difficulty of the task increases.
They perceive high grades as a result of hard work and positive study habits and regularly review their specific goals, leaving space for alternation. On the other hand, non-strategic learners are frequently disorganised, thus do not know how to approach an assignment. They struggle to break the problem into particular, achievable goals, lacking focus and persistency. Non-strategic learners are often frustrated and anxious about failing, attributing bad grades to factors outside of their control (“Learning strategies,” 2020).
The SRSD model includes six distinct stages that students should follow in a chronological order. As mentioned in “Learning strategies” (2020), first, an instructor should help a student to develop background knowledge, putting emphasis on identifying relevant skills that a learner already possesses. Second, the strategy should be discussed in terms of long-term and short-term benefits. In other words, a teacher should stress the advantages of using an objective in the specific project and in long run. Third, the strategy should be modeled as a faculty member exposes students to the skilled learners’ thought process.
Next, an objective should be memorized with the emphasis put on the activity performed during each step. After that, a strategy should be supported when the teacher provides constructive feedback and positive reinforcement. Finally, students should establish independent practice as instructors incorporate the objectives into learning process (“Learning strategies,” 2020).
