Academic Writing: Finding Your Scholarly Voice

What scholarly writing means to a future scholar?

It is crucial to write and practice writing academic and scholarly articles to be in a position to tell if you are capable of writing. It is also outstanding as it gives one a chance to test the lifestyle that is suitable for them. Publishing academic works is beneficial when applying for an academic job in any of the research-oriented fields. Publications in peer-review journals are realistic views of a person’s capability to prove that the work has recognition from the scholars. Writing skills can be learned and, therefore, it is indispensable to learn how to write before writing academic and scholarly articles.

Challenges encountered in finding a scholarly voice

Some of the challenges encountered in writing include the intensive life of graduates, the social obligations that they have, and their need to have downtime for regular academic work. It is essential to recognize the essential advantages of planning work during academic research. Writing involves working hard as well as having adequate preparation. A positive attitude towards writing plays a vital role in fulfilling the crucial steps to be in a position to come up with a good and creative paper.

The other challenge that graduates school students face is that they want to finish the minimum requirements of the graduate school for them to graduate before they start writing. The challenge associated with this is that the scholars do not have the knowledge of the basic requirements needed for the writer. They have not also taken their time to explore the other avenues and to be fully sure that they are interested in writing.

The second challenge is the dedication needed to develop an academic paper. Each article that is written requires more time, dedication, and a lot of reasoning. It also requires expertise in the field as well as a lot of energy that should be channelled towards the research. Sometimes, the chances to publish the work might come on rare occasions. Most of the students cannot be the best editors of their work since they might have difficulty in separating the work they wrote from their minds. The power of maintaining focus and keeping schedule is essential. Furthermore, the selection of the journal for publication should be done adequately. The students and scholars need to select the journals, which have friendly conditions and the ones that focus on small topics (DeNeef & Goodwin, 2007).

The strategy to promote critical thinking and protect against bias in one’s scholarly writing

One of the strategies that can be employed to improve critical thinking is improving the knowledge of psychology in education as well as the research methodology. For example, improving knowledge on how to be sensitive to racial, age, and ethnic groups can be valuable. The writers’ mental model for picturing their task makes an immense difference in writing a successful paper. When writing, it is indispensable to realize the terms to consider or use.

Some of the terms used can be offensive. In addition to avoiding gender, ethnic, cultural, and age bias, it is essential to avoid stereotyping individuals based on other forms of classes. These classes include occupation, religion, financial class, political beliefs, intellectual or substantial impairments. It is essential to call a specific group by the name that they desire. Understanding the work also aids in protection against biases, as the knowledge of the work is inherent in the brain.
