Initial Goal
- I want to get an excellent GPA.
- I want to develop speaking skills.
Specific
- I want to have a GPA of 3.8 by the end of the semester to increase my chances of successful employment.
- I want to be able to give at least a five-minute speech in front of an audience of 10 people or more. The speech can be prepared in advance, yet it must be performed without looking at the notes, hesitation, and unnecessary pauses. I want to be able to perform such a speech by May 2022. This is a goal because such a skill will help me a lot in my career.
Measurable
- The progress can be measured easily by tracking my GPA; the 3.9 GPA threshold determines my success.
- The progress needs to be measured based on qualitative and quantitative criteria. Firstly, my speech needs to be at least five-minutes long – this is the success criterion; therefore, to understand my progress, I will need to track the time of my speeches. The second criterion is the clarity of my speech, which is measured by the number of unnecessary pauses and hesitations I make during my speech. The success will be met when there are zero hesitations and unnecessary pauses in my speech.
Achievable
- I believe that I have the skills required to achieve the goal. To ensure this achievement, I will invest additional two hours of my time into studying during weekdays and extra three hours during the weekends.
- Currently, I do not have the skills necessary to achieve my goal. I will develop these skills by participating in every meeting of the local debate club until my deadline, and I will write, perform, record, and review at least one speech per day until my deadline.
Relevant
- I am setting this goal now so that by the time I graduate, I will have a stronger resume and better job opportunities. This goal is aligned with my long-run objectives, as those focus on developing my future career.
- I am setting this goal now to get the required amount of practice to use my speaking skills by summer freely. This goal is a part of my long-run strategy considering the development of skills necessary for my career path.
Time-bound
As mentioned before, the deadline is the end of the current semester. It is realistic, as I calculated that I could raise my GPA to 3.8 by achieving a certain number of A grades within the current educational period.
As it was mentioned before, the deadline is May 2022. It is realistic, as there are some examples of people that I know who were able to significantly develop their speaking skills in a shorter amount of time.
