Noam Chomsky

Avram Noam Chomsky is an American public intellectual, linguist, philosopher, cognitive scientist, historian, social critic, and political activist. He is an Institute Professor Emeritus at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and a Laureate Professor of Linguistics at the University of Arizona. Noam is one of the founders of the field of cognitive science. He developed the theory of transformational grammar and syntactic structures, pivotal in remodeling language study.

Noam Chomsky rose to national attention for his anti-war essay "The Responsibility of Intellectuals" in 1967 and became associated with the New Left. He became involved in the linguistics wars, articulated the propaganda model of media criticism, and exposed the Indonesian occupation of East Timor. He has continued his political activism, opposing the 2003 US invasion of Iraq and supporting the Occupy movement.

Chomsky is widely recognized for sparking the cognitive revolution in the human sciences and is a leading critic of US foreign policy, contemporary state capitalism, and mass media.

Noam started his career at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1955, where he still works as a linguistics professor. From 1958 to 1959, Chomsky served as a National Science Foundation fellow at the Institute for Advanced Study.

In 2017, Chomsky also joined the University of Arizona as a part-time professor of linguistics.

Research Interests and Political Views

Linguistics

Chomsky’s linguistic theory is based on biolinguistics, which holds that the principles underpinning language structure are biologically preset in the human mind and genetically inherited. He rejects behaviorist psychology and argues that language is a unique evolutionary development of the human species.

Universal grammar

Noam Chomsky’s nativist theory of innate syntactic knowledge suggests that children must learn language-specific features of their native languages. Chomsky based his argument on observations of human language acquisition. He describes a “poverty of the stimulus” gap between the rich linguistic competence children attain and the linguistic stimuli they are exposed to. He argues that an innate linguistic capacity must supplement the primary linguistic data. Noam suggests that linguists need to detect the device and the constraints it imposes on possible human languages.

Transformational-generative grammar

Transformational-generative grammar is a theory describing the modelling, encoding, and deducing of a native speaker’s linguistic capabilities. It was developed by Noam Chomsky in the mid-1950s and became the dominant syntactic theory in linguistics for two decades. It posits that language consists of both deep and surface structures, and uses mathematical notation to express the rules that govern the connection between meaning and sound. Chomsky developed the Chomsky hierarchy, a logical set of phrase-structure grammar types grouped into four nested subsets and increasingly complex types. This classification is still relevant to formal language theory and theoretical computer science.

Chomsky’s minimalist approach to grammar focused on the principles and parameters framework. Noam emphasizes the plasticity of the brain’s neural circuits and the mechanisms the brain uses to generate these rules and regulate speech.

Political Views

Noam Chomsky is a prominent political dissident who identifies as a libertarian socialist or an anarcho-syndicalist. He views these positions as ideals that best meet human needs, and believes that politics lies outside the remit of science. He believes that the political truth is systematically suppressed or distorted by an elite corporatocracy, and that intellectuals should use their resources, social privilege, and training to aid popular democracy movements. His primary political outlets are education and publication, and he is a longtime member of the Industrial Workers of the World international union.
