The case is about students from Normandy wanting to apply for an AP Math class. What makes the situation complicated is that their results are rather low; hence, they are not qualified for this extracurricular. The students not attending the class may slightly decrease their college application opportunities. Moreover, the parents are concerned that the status of the class will suffer if the principal allows them to take this AP Math.
The depicted situation is complicated as a school’s reputation plays a significant role in its future cooperation with universities. Hence, educators cannot risk accepting students into extracurricular activities they are not eligible for. Moreover, the students’ grades in this class may have a negative effect on their future. As a social institution, the school is responsible for integrating children into society (BCCampus, 2022). This, in turn, could not only have a devastating impact on education but on their careers as well.
However, as mentioned earlier, the students not taking the class slightly decreases their chances of being accepted into colleges. The struggles of some of the students in this class may be caused by their financial struggles, which lead to them being absent during the majority of the school year (Commonwealth Institute, 2022). This, in turn, raises the issue of social inequality in the matter. Higher education is very important for a person to shape their role in society; thus, this opportunity is too valuable for them to lose (MLibraries, 2022). Moreover, without having a college degree, these students will not be able to find suitable jobs. Thus, they will have to apply for low-paying jobs.
The principal will need to access their skills and their ascribed status individually to review the possible causes. This may assist him in making the right choice regarding the matter. The students’ plans for higher education are crucial to the matter as well, which is another factor the man must consider. Thus, the principal must be mindful of the aforementioned factors.
In conclusion, schools are responsible for integrating children into society. This is what makes the principal’s decision regarding AP Math classes rather important. While making his decision, he must review the students’ ascribed status and skills. Poverty or lack of required skills could be some of the causes. This assessment will assist him in making the right decision while neither damaging the school’s reputation nor deteriorating the disadvantage of underprivileged students.
