Speaking Part of “The College Board’s English Competence Examination”

College Board is an organization that provides people from different countries with the ability to study in English even if it is not their mother tongue. This system includes many types of tests, which can vary from general to academic, and individuals have a chance to choose any kind of examination according to their needs (Randall, 2020). College Board examinations are usually used by schools, colleges, and universities in the USA. One of the most known exams is called Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT), and it consists of writing and reading examinations, mathematics, and language test. Before taking the examination, students usually spend several months understanding the structure to receive a better outcome.

The Importance of the Language Exam

Each part of the exam is crucial, and this discussion will explain the usefulness of the speaking exam provided by the College Board and what problems do not allow these exams to become the most efficient. Classes in American schools, colleges, and universities are highly interactive, and experts, who test speaking skills, should analyze the ability to participate in active discussions. Language tests can be considered the crucial part of the exams as learning and memory skills are closely connected to communication with the surrounding (Dincer, 2017). Candidates who can freely express their idea in a structured form receive better results while taking exams provided by College Board.

Issues That Might Occur

However, speaking exams also have drawbacks that do not allow examinations to perform efficiently. For instance, only one person evaluates the candidate’s ability to speak English fluently without any mistakes during the SAT exam. Only one person comes up with the final mark regarding the speaking part, and other experts do not have a chance to express their opinion and influence the grade. Some professionals might have different rating techniques, and diverse views are important in the grading process. The marks may not meet candidates’ expectations, and more appeals might occur, making testing systems less reliable and professional. Nevertheless, College Board adjusts solutions to this problem, and more examinations are becoming overviewed by multiple experts.

Qualities of Good Language Test

Every candidate must understand how to make their speaking more efficient and receive a better grade. The key structure for successful language testing includes practicality, reliability, and validity. All these steps follow each other and, in conclusion, create positive outcomes. It is important to have enough knowledge in different topics to be prepared for questions in science or sports. The knowledge should be appropriate and updated to ensure that there is no misleading information provided to the expert. Moreover, all provided material should be structured well to ensure the examiner that all information is reliable. Academic phrases can be used to catch attention, but it is crucial to know the limits. The balance between theoretical knowledge and a general understanding of phenomena causes positive outcomes and high grades.

Avoidance of Misleading Facts

It is important not to underestimate experts as they usually check candidates for all language exam criteria. Relevant content significantly influences a student’s performance, and professionals are trained to detect false facts, which can cause misunderstandings. The recordings taken during the oral examination help experts come to the final conclusion seriously by ensuring that every point is correct. When candidates critically state the objectives of their speech and provide clear facts, it becomes easier to grade and check the reliability of provided information. Validation stays one of the main priorities which both experts and candidates should highly evaluate.
